About property
This historic building is located right on the main square of Salemi, a charming hamlet in Western Sicily. It’s a traditional Sicilian upper class palace, that was built during the second half of the 19th century, that features an overall floor area of 650 sqm, divided in four storeys, between the interior (450 sqm), the courtyard (50 sqm) and the terraces that overlook the square (150 sqm).
The location is one of the strong points of the estate, which is situated right in front of the town hall: from the windows at the upper floors and from the terraces of the building you’ll enjoy a fantastic view of the skyline of Salemi, with its churches’ domes and bell towers showing up among the shingle roofs, and the countryside in the distance.
Through the old wooden door of the palace you’ll get to the beautiful courtyard, whose Arab style you’ll immediately recognize. This outdoor area is adorned by original majolica and a fountain.
The whole building has been recently renovated, using top quality materials, with a special care for details thanks to the employment of the best local manpower. The ground floor once made of warehouses, that have been redesigned, keeping intact the original style of the building, to create a wide open space that can be used for a variety of purposes.
You’ll surely appreciate the 5 meters high cross vaults created using tuff bricks – you’ll find the same cross vaults in the living area and in the bedrooms of the first floor.
The upper floors are divided between two residential units, that feature a few shared areas like the terrace on the top floor.
The first unit is made of the living area, 3 bedrooms, the kitchen and a bathroom with shower, plus an attic with 5 meters head height.
The second unit comprises part of the first floor and the second floor of the building. On the first floor you’ll find: a wide living area, a beautiful built-in kitchen, the first bedroom and two bathrooms – one provided with a shower the other with a bathtub – plus a spare room. On the second floor you’ll find a room with a terrific view on the town and the hills, a small room that can be equipped with a kitchenette, and one more bathroom with shower.
Both the units have access to the wide terraces on the third floor, that overlook the main square and the town hall, with a great view on the surroundings of Salemi. On a higher level you’ll find yet another terrace with an even better landscape, adorned by a majolica-tiled small oven.
Salemi and surroundings
The entrance of the building is 10 meters away from the place where Garibaldi claimed for himself the title of “Dictator” of the Kingdom of the two Sicilies. The Italian general had landed with a thousand men on the coast of Marsala, and arrived in Salemi shortly after to prepare the crucial battle for Italy’s unification. That’s why the main square of the town is named Piazza Dittatura, and here you’ll find Palazzo Municipale (Town Hall).
Salemi is a lively town in the heart of Western Sicily: you’ll be a short drive away from the main cities of the area, such as Trapani and Marsala, as well as from the most famous beaches of the Western coast. The Stagnone nature reserve, including the famous isle of Mothia, is within easy reach, while Trapani is the point of departure of the ferries headed to the Aegadian islands.
